A dreamy destination in Pontresina: Grand Hotel Kronenhof

Nestled among Swiss mountain peaks, in Engadin valley, lies a paradise getaway, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof. The area boasts a number of luxury resorts but the impressive architecture of the Kronenhof in Pontresina will leave you feeling like you are in a fairy-tale. Magnificent views, gourmet dining and luxurious accommodations all contribute to your magical vacation.

We have visited the Engadin area during the summer, so of course the draw of winter sports had us wanting to return. Just a few kilometers drive (or train ride) from St. Moritz you arrive in the beautiful village of Pontresina. The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is the only 5-star hotel in town and delivers a true 5-star experience, sweeping you into a wonderful world of fun and relaxation.

We arrived by car and were welcomed by the hotel staff in front of the hotel. The check-in was seamless and the bell-staff assisted with our luggage, which arrived at our room at the same moment we did.

Known for its unparalleled location, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof has been refurbished yet stays true to its traditional roots, providing guests a tranquil base in the Engadin.

As you enter the hotel lobby you are greeted by high ceilings and a unique architectural design, which looks as if it dates back centuries but is elegant and classy at the same time.

Our children were pleasantly surprised to see an enticing cart toting cakes and biscuits, so shortly after checking in we were back up in the stunning lobby enjoying a little tea time.

The gracious hotel staff showed us to our suite, which had a queen bed, a sitting area, and separate beds for each of the children. The hotel has 112 rooms in total, from single rooms to deluxe suites. Some of the rooms have interconnecting rooms, making it the ideal set up for a family.

We were housed in the hotel’s Junior Suite Grand Premium which was the perfect accommodation for 2 adults and 2 children. We were delighted with the separate sitting area, which included a couch for one child, and an additional bed for another. Our pleasant patio had open access to the out doors and our eyes were drawn to the little touches, like inviting bedroom slippers, and robes and the upscale faucets and finishes in the bathroom. We already felt pampered!

The sitting area became a favorite spot to enjoy the views, watch television or enjoy an afternoon snack.

The children were even given their own slippers and robes, I mean, how darling are these slippers? I loved that the hotel catered to families, making us feel so welcome.

We enjoyed all of the touches you would expect from a 5-star hotel. This included complimentary water bottles, restocked each evening, a fruit bowl, and added touches for the young family members. Age appropriate gifts were left for our children, a sweet little stuffed animal and a bag full of goodies for our youngest, and a box full of candies for our teenager, which gifts were greatly appreciated and enjoyed!

A much appreciated bonus to our room was the access to a walk-out patio with views of the Swiss Alps. Each evening we accessed the patio to check out the gorgeous full moon.

The elegant granite and marble bathroom was stocked with all that would be expected. Fragrant hand-soaps, aroma shampoos and lotions, slippers, robes, etc. Our suite had a Jacuzzi-style tub and a separate area for the shower and toilet.

The evening staff provided us with a delicious homemade nusstorte. Now if you have not tried this treat, well, wow, you should. It was a nut filled torte and a most delectable dessert to have hand delivered to our room. This was just another one of the wonderful perks from the hotel.

Our Junior Suite had very comfortable beds, with crisp clean duvets. We frequently enjoyed our sitting area to savor the outside view of the mountains. It was easy to kick our feet up and relax in our room.

Switzerland is known for breathtaking spas and the spa at Grand Hotel Kronenhof exceeded our expectations. Our first evening there the kids enjoyed splashing in the pools as the adults soaked in the spa and sauna, reveling in the peace and quiet.

The second day, I awoke just as the moon was setting around 7:00 am and I decided to check out the spa in the early morning, and to my delight, the moon was shining brightly, through the massive windows framing the Swiss Alps and there was not another soul in sight in the spa. The courteous staff offered to turn off some of the lights so I could enjoy the moon shining in the windows. This moment of solitude and beauty will be a memory I will always treasure.

The grand 2,000 square meter Spa has views that will leave you speechless. The 20 meter infinity pool can be used for swimming laps, splashing with the kids, or just soaking in the view, while sipping on the hot peppermint tea, so graciously provided.

In addition to all the upscale amenities of the pool, there is a massive spa with jet beds, and amazing floor to ceiling views of the Swiss Alps. The spa included 13 therapy rooms, a saltwater grotto, hot/cold foot baths, saunas, couples massages, steam rooms, a solarium, waterbeds, childrens’ pools, a cozy fireplace and so much more.

For those who want to feel rejuvenated Spa packages can be arranged. You can choose any combination of yoga sessions, body-detox, facials, massages, etc. The possibilities are limitless.

Besides the many outdoor winter and summer sports for exercise there is a gym, where you can sign up for gym sessions, or work out on your own, all the while enjoying jaw-dropping views, and if you desire, a glass of champagne in hand. Why not?

It is 5-star for adults and for children, as well! The activity center provides a weekly schedule of events to interest younger guests. Fussball and computers for the older children, and scavenger hunts throughout the hotel, were favorites. As an additional bonus, kids can dine in a separate dining room off the main dining area. Our kids are 10 and 15 and wanted to dine with us, but had I known this option a few years back, this would have been the perfect getaway for parents wanting to get a break.

As an ice-skating lover, imagine my daughter’s excitement to find out she could enjoy ice skating on the hotel’s private ice skating rink. The hotel offers plenty of activities from ice skating (skates free of charge) on a private ice rink, to a quaint bowling alley, a billiards table and many kids activities.

With the majestic Grand Kronenhof in the backdrop of the ice rink and the Swiss Alps in the foreground, the ice-rink is stunning. Hours on end were spent here. What a fantastic feature of this hotel!

Even better, is the hotel restaurant, Le Pavillon, on the sun decks overlooking the ice rink. You can bet you would have found me with a cup of tea soaking in some Vitamin-D on the sun deck, as I took pleasure in watching my little girl put on an ice-skating show. You can also enjoy a cheese fondue, oysters and champagne, or many other delicious selections from the restaurant’s menu.

For an entertaining, indoor, evening activity there is, also, a stunning room where all ages can enjoy playing pool or eight-ball. The elegant curtains and wood panel walls make you feel like you have stepped back in time.

And who would have thought, there would be a bowling alley inside the hotel? A small quaint, one lane alley, with hand carved bowling balls, is attached to a small fondue-restaurant (which can be rented out for events) and is the perfect spot to get a little family competition going on.

The hotel is adorned with some of the most lavish chandeliers and ornate ceilings. Each room that you enter makes you feel like you have stepped back in time, yet there is a sense of grand and enduring elegance.

How quaint is this sitting room? The hotel bar offers aperitivos in the evening and this area is also buzzing at night, and is a great spot for a drink after a long day on the slopes.

There are multiple sitting rooms which you can enjoy in private and most of the windows face south, so they can overlook the gorgeous Swiss Alps.

The recently added cigar lounge with state of the art ventilation, is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of whisky, while the kids enjoy the billiards in the closed off adjacent room, a win for the whole family.

You want to feel like you had a getaway, even when you’re on holiday with the kids. Thankfully, our children are older now and happy to enjoy some television time in the room during the evening, so it’s the perfect time for parents to sneak away, right? The grand lobby was an ideal place to have a glass of wine, while listening to the piano man.

The main lobby is also a great area to enjoy a cup of coffee, meet with friends or simply relax with a glass of wine.

Upon arrival to the hotel we were given a tour of the the facilities, and during the tour, tea-time was mentioned. Now for my son this is not so interesting, but my daughter is a fan. High-tea is served in the grand entrance of the hotel. Defiantly a must.

I mean with those views, how can you not turn around and look out the windows? Snow capped mountains in the distance, and a little girl dreaming of skiing down the mountain.

All the bells and whistles…..as I sip on my afternoon tea, ahhh, can I please stay here forever?

And for the men in your life, a beer in hand (age appropriate, hehe) or soft-drinks and chips will do the job while the ladies enjoy their cuppa tea.

The hotel offers a few restaurants on site, also, their sister hotel, Kulm, in St Moritz has other dining options you can enjoy. When booking you can book the half-board option, where breakfast and dinner will be provided. Both meals are served in the grand dining room. Breakfast is casual but evening dinners are elegant and dress attire is required.

We were happily surprised to have an Italian speaking staff of waiters to serve us, which we might add, were incredibly friendly and really enhanced our dining experience.

On arrival to dinner we were seated and given the menu for the evening. There was a fixed menu where you could pick between the starters, mains and more. We enjoyed a delicious pea soup, ravioli dishes, meat dishes, crème brûlée, fruits, breads and more.

Evening dinners are accompanied by the piano man, seen in the background. He was fabulous and played in many rooms in the hotel, a great addition to a 5-star dinner.

Breakfast was a self-serve buffet with a selection of fruits, meats, cold-cuts, cheeses, breads, muesli, eggs, dried fruits, and basically anything your heart could desire.

We had very happy kids who happily ordered pancakes and crepes. You can even sip on a glass of champagne to start off your day, if you’d like. It was a buffet style breakfast meant for a king.

The Engadin area is chock full of winter activities. Whether it be watching Snow Polo or the down-hill racing, to taking a train ride over the Swiss Alps or cross country skiing in the area…it is all available.

We arrived in Engadin with the intention to downhill ski while we were there but our plans took a detour when we realized there was a cross-country trail just outside the doors of our hotel. The trails in the area cover over 200 km, wow! So we took off to explore. Just a few minutes walk from the hotel are a few ski rental places. We rented our gear and were off to explore the snowy countryside, cross country style. Needless to say, we are now fans of both cross-country and down-hill skiing.

There are also many ski resorts in the area: Corviglia may be the most popular (hosted the Winter Olympics) but there are many others, Diavolezza, Corvatsch and more. The area is perfect for winter sport lovers.

For those who may not be winter outdoor enthusiasts there is a train you can take through the snowy landscapes of the Engadin. We had read about the Bernina Express but never experienced it. Luckily, the train goes right through Pontresina.

The hotel was kind enough to book our tickets through their concierge services. Booking on the Bernina Express is recommended as the window seats are often sold out. The train ride from Pontresina up the Swiss alps will be one we will all remember. Add this to your list as it’s a must.

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is the ideal place for a rejuvenating holiday in the mountains. The hotel stays true to its traditional past and gorgeous surroundings by providing guests with an unforgettable experience and a base for an epic holiday. We had such a lovely weekend together as a family. The location was the perfect home base for us to experience everything the area has to offer.

Grand Hotel Kronenhof provides all the features you would expect from a 5-star hotel, yet at the same time you may feel taken back in time by the majestic lobbies and rooms filled with hand painted mosaics, grand columns, and elegant chandeliers. The very atmosphere is one of beauty and peace.
