Living in Switzerland for more than a decade, I am still amazed at how we find new places to explore with which we fall in love. We’ve been to Davos a few times but have never visited the little town of Klosters, just 15 minutes outside of Davos. The town of Klosters, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, won our hearts over like many Swiss villages do.
We had the opportunity to take a little getaway together as a family and stay at the Hotel Piz Buin, named after the Piz Buin Mountain which forms the border between the Swiss Alps and the Austrian Alps. The unique hotel is centrally located for easy discovery of the Swiss Alps.
Hotel Piz Buin backs up to the Landquart River making for gorgeous views and the sound of the river just seems to have a relaxing element to it. There are 53 mountain chalet type rooms that are very spacious. As a family we have experienced many hotels where we feel cramped or on top of each other but with the large rooms this was not the case at all.
There was a separate sleeping area with 2 twins making a king bed separated by a wall that had 2 drop down beds for children. There was privacy and comfort for all. The rooms had a brand new smell and were meticulously clean and distinctively designed.
The room had a little kitchenette area with a table, chairs and a bench where we enjoyed eating feeling as if we were in a little mountain cabin. The room had the most spacious storage areas I have seen. You could easily unpack and feel at home in this beautiful space, which felt more like a small apartment. Our room also had a small fridge and high bar stools with windows looking out on the Swiss Alps.
The bathroom was spacious and lovely with a separate bathtub and shower. The walk in shower had a massive overhead shower head and all the amenities you would expect to find in a four star hotel.
A highlight we enjoyed was the extended balcony with two separate doors exiting onto the balcony. It was so pleasant to enjoy a glass of wine at the little table and chairs on the balcony off our room before dinner. The special charm to this was the Landquart River that flowed directly behind the hotel. The peaceful sounds of the flowing water and the views of the Swiss Alps made the location of the Hotel Piz Buin topnotch.
The hotel’s central location is wonderfully convenient. Less than a five minute walk from the hotel, you arrive at the Gotschna cable car. The Cable car takes you to the top of the mountain opening up the option to explore hundreds of kilometers of trials all over Graubünden. When staying as a guest of the hotel you will be provided with the Davos Klosters card which provides many savings on the public transit and gondolas. The trains and buses between the towns are free and the gondolas are heavily discounted. This was a wonderful bonus because these expenses add up quickly when traveling as a family.
Hotel Piz Buin is known as a golfing hotel. If you decide to stay at the hotel you are able to play the local Kloster’s Golf club for free as a guest of the hotel. We enjoyed a wonderful day on the Kloster’s Golf Course, which the hotel kindly arranged for us as a guest of their hotel. In Switzerland you must have your golf license to play, or another license, if coming from outside the country, so make sure to check this out with the hotel. All of these additional discounts and perks are a lovely addition to staying at the Hotel Piz Buin.
Every morning a delicious breakfast is provided which is included in your stay. Meats, cheeses, and many different kinds of breads are offered. In addition to the breakfast buffet spread, you can order omelets or other made-to breakfast items. This is a nutritious and tasty way to start your day before you take off to explore the Alps.
The helpful receptionist is happy to offer advice on what to do and see in the area. Klosters-Davos area is famous for its mountain activities, from biking to hiking, to everything in between. We spent 3 nights at the hotel and never once had to use our car. We used the public transit which is all centrally located right next to the hotel. One morning we got up and went up Gotschna cable car and did the scenic Panoramic trail from Klosters to Davos. Wow, just wow, is all I can say! The views are divine.
After a long day on the mountains, in which we covered over 15 kilometers, it was so nice to return back “home” to our hotel and wind down in the spa and sauna.
There is a lovely sauna with a steam room and a few saunas, with a relaxing room. You can also massage your tired feet and back on the jets in the hot tub or relax on the lounge chairs in the heated pool room. It was the perfect conclusion to an awesome day!
For those who want to exercise there is an exercise room with free weights, weight machines and step machines. One morning, I enjoyed a peaceful workout followed by a morning swim. The hotel is equipped with all the amenities you would expect to find in a four star hotel.
The outside terrace restaurant overlooking the river is the perfect spot for lunch or dinner during the summertime. We did not need to venture far for our lunch or dinner, as the hotel offered an ample menu from hamburgers, to pasta, to flammkuchen.
Pre-dinner drinks on the patio with its Alpen views were the perfect finish to a beautiful day, after our day’s exploration of the area. You can picture just how inviting the hotel must feel in the winter with their cozy lobby and the couches in their bistro-bar area.
One evening there was a crisp chill in the air so we opted to enjoy dinner and drinks inside. It is such a lovely restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food.
We were sad to say goodbye to Hotel Piz Buin after our four days spent discovering beautiful Klosters. We felt right at home in the hotel with all of its homey amenities. We also appreciated the professionalism and kindness of the staff. We will definitely add this to our list of family hotels where we choose to vacation and we would highly recommend it if you are in the Davos-Kloster area. An oasis away from it all, in the Swiss Mountain air, relaxing and top class- Hotel Piz Buin gets 5 stars in our book.
A big thank you to Hotel Piz Buin hosting us. Opinions in the post are our own and based on our own personal experience.
